What Does the Owens Corning Duration Warranty Cover?

Owens Corning Duration shingles come with a limited lifetime warranty that covers manufacturing defects. Under the standard warranty, the first 10 years are Owens Corning's TRU PROtection period, when the company covers replacement shingles, components and the labor to install them. After that, coverage becomes prorated and pays a share of the product cost only. The warranty also includes 15 years of blow-off coverage, wind ratings of 130 or 160 mph depending on installation, and 25 years of algae resistance when an approved Owens Corning hip and ridge product is used. Upgrading to one of Owens Corning's system warranties stretches TRU PROtection to 50 years and, at the top two tiers, adds workmanship coverage.
One detail matters most when you sell your home. Owens Corning's Standard Product Limited Warranty (Pub. No. 10023873-I, August 2026) allows the warranty to transfer only once. If the transfer happens during the TRU PROtection period, the new owner gets the balance of the coverage, but if it happens after that period ends, the remaining warranty is reduced to a 2-year period after the date of the ownership change. This guide explains each part of the Duration warranty, how the system warranties compare, what is excluded, and how to register or transfer coverage.

What Does "Limited Lifetime" Mean on a Duration Roof?
A limited lifetime warranty is a manufacturer's promise to fix covered defects for as long as the qualifying owner owns the home, subject to the conditions and limits written into the warranty.
Owens Corning's standard warranty spells out who qualifies. Limited lifetime coverage applies only to single-family detached homes where the owner of the roof lives in the home. For other structures, such as homes owned by a corporation, condominiums or apartments, the warranty runs 40 years from the original installation date and the TRU PROtection period is five years.
For a typical owner-occupied house in the Pittsburgh area, that means the lifetime terms apply for as long as you own and live in it.
What Is TRU PROtection and What Happens After It Ends?
TRU PROtection is Owens Corning's name for the non-prorated part of the warranty. Under the standard product warranty it lasts for the first 10 years. During that time, the warranty covers the cost of replacing defective Owens Corning shingles and components and the labor directly required to repair, replace or recover them. Owens Corning's warranty overview notes that the standard TRU PROtection coverage excludes tear-off and disposal costs.
After the TRU PROtection period, the warranty moves into a prorated period. Owens Corning says it will provide prorated compensation for the cost of the defective Owens Corning products, but no labor or other costs are covered during that time.
Owens Corning's system warranties change this picture. System Protection, Preferred Protection and Platinum Protection all list a TRU PROtection period of the first 50 years, and Owens Corning's overview says those tiers include tear-off and disposal costs if required.
How Do Wind, Blow-Off and Algae Coverage Work?
Wind coverage on Duration shingles depends on how the roof is installed. Owens Corning's standard warranty lists Duration Series shingles at 130 mph. The rating rises to 160 mph when the roof uses Owens Corning starter shingles on the eaves and rakes, Owens Corning hip and ridge shingles, underlayment, and one more qualifying ventilation or ice and water barrier product.
Owens Corning's warranty overview lists blow-off coverage for the first 15 years, starting after the shingles thermally seal.
Algae coverage protects against the black streaks caused by blue-green algae. Owens Corning lists 25 years of StreakGuard algae resistance coverage when the roof uses an approved Owens Corning hip and ridge product, such as ProEdge, DecoRidge or DuraRidge. Without one, the algae warranty drops from 25 years to 10 years. Owens Corning also notes that algae resistance is offered on a regional basis.
How Do System, Preferred and Platinum Protection Compare?
Owens Corning offers three extended system warranties on top of the standard warranty. Here is how its warranty overview describes each one:
Standard Product Limited Warranty: 10 years of TRU PROtection, no workmanship coverage, and no contractor certification required. A minimum of 3 Owens Corning components is needed for the components to take on the shingle's coverage period.
System Protection: 50 years of TRU PROtection, no workmanship coverage. Requires at least 3 Owens Corning components (1 hip and ridge and 2 others) and installation by an Owens Corning Platinum or Preferred contractor.
Preferred Protection: 50 years of TRU PROtection and 10 years of workmanship coverage. Requires at least 4 Owens Corning components (1 hip and ridge, 1 underlayment and 2 others) and a Platinum or Preferred contractor.
Platinum Protection: 50 years of TRU PROtection and limited lifetime workmanship coverage that is reduced after 25 years based on the age of the roof. Requires at least 4 Owens Corning components and installation by an Owens Corning Roofing Platinum contractor.
The component requirements are where estimates differ. Two quotes that both say "Owens Corning Duration" can carry very different warranties depending on which starter, ridge, underlayment and ventilation products are included. Our article on what an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor means for Pittsburgh homeowners explains how contractor certification ties in.
What Does the Duration Warranty Not Cover?
Owens Corning's standard warranty lists a number of exclusions. The main ones include:
1. Acts of God, including hail, strong storms and winds above the rated speed
2. Improper or faulty installation of roofing products
3. Damage from improper or inadequate roof ventilation or drainage, unvented attics or enclosed rafter assemblies
4. Pre-existing conditions or structural failures under the roof
5. Foot traffic and falling objects
6. Products that are not made by Owens Corning
7. Alterations made after installation
Storm damage is usually a homeowners insurance matter, not a warranty matter, so read your policy and talk to your insurer if a storm damages your roof. The ventilation exclusion is worth special attention because attic ventilation is part of the roofing system. How Do You Register or Transfer a Duration Warranty?
Owens Corning offers online warranty registration and encourages homeowners who buy a system warranty to make sure their contractor registers it and provides proof of purchase.
Transfers follow strict rules under the standard warranty:
The warranty can transfer one time, to the buyers of the home.
The new owner must contact Owens Corning within 60 days after the real estate transfer.
The new owner submits proof of purchase of the Owens Corning shingles and components, plus the installation date and ownership history.
Owens Corning's warranty page lists a transfer fee "upwards of $100," based on the terms of the warranty.
If the transfer happens after the TRU PROtection period, the remaining coverage is reduced to 2 years after the ownership change.
Keep your contract, product list and registration confirmation with your home records, because a future buyer will need them to meet the 60-day deadline. For a broader look at how shingle warranties work across brands, see what shingle warranties usually cover.
FAQ
Is the Owens Corning Duration warranty transferable?
Yes, once. The new owner must contact Owens Corning within 60 days of the sale. If the sale happens after the 10-year TRU PROtection period under the standard warranty, the remaining coverage drops to 2 years after the ownership change.
Does the Duration warranty cover labor?
During the TRU PROtection period it covers the labor directly needed to repair or replace defective Owens Corning products. After that period, the prorated coverage pays toward product cost only, with no labor.
Does the Owens Corning warranty cover hail damage?
No. Owens Corning's standard warranty excludes acts of God, including hail and winds above the rated speed. Hail damage is typically handled through homeowners insurance.
Does the Duration warranty cover installation mistakes?
The standard warranty excludes improper or faulty installation. Owens Corning's Preferred Protection adds 10 years of workmanship coverage, and Platinum Protection adds limited lifetime workmanship coverage that reduces after 25 years.
How long is the algae warranty on Duration shingles?
Owens Corning lists 25 years of StreakGuard algae resistance coverage when an approved Owens Corning hip and ridge product is used, and 10 years without one.
Does my contractor's certification affect the warranty?
Yes. Owens Corning's system warranties require installation by an Owens Corning Platinum or Preferred contractor, and Platinum Protection requires an Owens Corning Roofing Platinum contractor.
